QEH pupils took in all the major sights and the rich history of Berlin during their weekend trip to the German capital in October half term.

An incredible walking tour included the site of Hitler’s bunker, the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe and the Brandenburg Gate, followed by a visit to the Topography of Terror – a museum about the Nazi SS on the site of the former Gestapo HQ.

We were also lucky to tour the Reichstag where we sat in the German parliament, the Bundestag, and learned how it works, followed by a visit to the famous Reichstag Dome.

The most harrowing site was Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, which was a prototype for the later, more infamous camps such as Auschwitz.

We also learned about the many courageous people who risked their lives to escape from the former East Germany into free West Germany in the Checkpoint Charlie museum and toured the Berlin Wall Memorial.

QEH’s annual Lizzies Awards celebrated pupil creativity with an inspiring showcase of short films based on the themes ‘Three Wishes’ and ‘Myths’.

Thank you for making Alec’s first week so enjoyable. He’s loved every day and has come home really happy. In particular, he’s said the other boys have made him feel really included and like he’s always been there.
