Our Comment on Edward Colston

As well as being Head of Religion and Philosophy, Zak leads our digital vision. He was instrumental in developing our excellent online learning offering during lockdown, much to the relief of our parents, and is now leading the roll out of our school device programme.

Following the tearing down of the statue of Edward Colston and the inspiring Black Lives Matter campaign, various parties have understandably enquired about the links between Edward Colston and Queen Elizabeth’s Hospital. While QEH was not founded by Edward Colston, in the early 1700s the School did benefit from money donated by him and a number of other Bristol merchants.

QEH supports the Black Lives Matter campaign. We are committed to supporting all members of our BAME school community. We will continue, through the education we provide, to play our part in bringing about an end to all forms of prejudice that impact on so many people in Bristol and across the world.

Although we pride ourselves on being a culturally rich and diverse school, we recognise that we still need to do much more to ensure QEH is an ever more inclusive and compassionate community for all. We continually review all areas of school life to ensure we are educating our students effectively and building a school community which fully represents the local population.

As our Year 13 students prepare for their exams, QEH marked this poignant moment with a day of celebration, reflection, and tradition. From heartfelt speeches and emotional goodbyes to the historic reading of The Charge

Thank you for making Alec’s first week so enjoyable. He’s loved every day and has come home really happy. In particular, he’s said the other boys have made him feel really included and like he’s always been there.
