QEH Admissions FAQs: What Bristol Parents Ask Most

Thinking about applying to QEH? This quick guide answers the questions we hear most from Bristol parents – covering application deadlines, entrance assessments, bursaries, school visits, and more. Whether you’re new to independent schools or just new to QEH, we’re here to make the admissions process clear and supportive from the start.

Choosing the right school for your child is one of the most important decisions you will make, and it often starts with questions. If you are considering applying to QEH, whether for our Junior School, Senior School or Sixth Form intake, you may be wondering where to begin. To help make your journey smoother, we have answered some of the most common admissions questions we receive from Bristol families.

What ages can my child join QEH?

At QEH, we welcome boys into the Junior School from age 7 (Year 3), with our main entry points being into Year 3 and Year 5. Our Senior School is from age 11 (Year 7) with pupils also joining into Year 9. Sixth Form entry is open to both girls and boys aged 16 (Year 12). We occasionally have places available in other year groups, depending on availability. Our Admissions team is happy to talk through the best entry point for your child.

When should I apply and how long does the application process take?

We encourage families to apply as early as possible in the academic year before entry. Applications for the following September typically open in the autumn, please view our upcoming key dates for applications for September 2026 entry. The independent school application process at QEH is designed to be straightforward and supportive, with timely updates at each stage. You can view our term dates to help plan your child’s application timeline.

A key step, and best way to get a feel for QEH, is to attend one of our regular open events.

Are there entrance assessments or interviews?

Yes. For Junior School entry, boys would be invited to attend a Quest Day, our unique comprehensive assessment and taster day experience. This includes an online assessment (on iPads), classroom time, an exciting array of team building activities with the Head (Mr Wolverson) a delicious school lunch, and a fun afternoon of activities at our Failand sports ground. Boys will be assessed in English, mathematics, verbal and non-verbal reasoning. The assessments are extremely child friendly and include opportunities to do example questions before the assessment starts. There are also regular breaks built in.

For the Senior School and entry into Year 7 and 9, we run online entrance assessments in English, mathematics, verbal and non-verbal reasoning, as well as an interview with a senior member of staff in January each year.

Sixth Form applicants are invited to interview and should provide predicted GCSE grades. Our aim is to understand each child’s potential, not just academic ability. You can read more about the private school admissions process in Bristol in our detailed guide.

Do you offer financial assistance or scholarships?

Absolutely. QEH is committed to widening access and offers means-tested financial support from Year 7 onwards.  Details about our financial assistance criteria can be found on our financial assistance page, or you are welcome to speak directly with our admissions team in confidence.

Scholarships are available for entry in to Years 7, 9 and 12 to recognise academic excellence and talent or potential in the areas of music, drama, and sport. In line with other top independent schools, scholarships at QEH do not carry a fee remission. More information on our breadth of scholarships can be view on our scholarship page

Can we visit the school before applying?

Yes, we highly recommend visiting. Seeing the school in person is the best way to get a feel for life at QEH. We run a number of Open Events throughout the year, and private tours can also be arranged. You can view upcoming events and booking details on our Admissions page.

Our son is engaged and cheerful, getting on with the tasks which are diverse, interesting and meaningful for him.  It’s a big enough workload to keep him busy but not to overwhelm.
Thank you so much for all you are doing.
